Open settings from the Apple menu
The Apple menu is at the top-left of the screen. It provides a reliable entry even when the Settings icon is absent from the Dock. A missing Dock shortcut does not mean the settings app was removed.
- Open the Apple menu.
- Choose System Settings, or System Preferences on an older release.
- Select a sidebar category or search for the option you need.

Translate an older tutorial into your version
An older Desktop & Screen Saver screenshot does not imply that your newer Mac is missing wallpaper controls. Search by the setting itself rather than trying to reproduce the old window layout. Use the version selector on Apple’s guide when the exact path matters.
| You want to change | Where to start on recent macOS |
|---|---|
| Desktop background | Wallpaper. |
| Dock size or screen edge | Desktop & Dock. |
| Desktop widget visibility | Desktop & Dock, then Widgets. |
| Top menu bar hiding | Menu Bar on Tahoe 26; older versions may use Control Center or Desktop & Dock. |
| Keyboard actions | Keyboard, then Keyboard Shortcuts. |

Search for an option instead of scanning every panel
Type the control you want into the Settings search field, such as wallpaper, Dock or menu bar. Choose the relevant result and read its label before changing it. Search is useful when a sidebar category has moved or when your display leaves only a small part of the settings window visible.
Keep app settings separate
Safari, Music and other apps have their own Settings commands under the app’s name in the menu bar. A Music playback preference may not appear in System Settings at all. First decide whether the setting affects the whole Mac or only the app you are using.

Check missing or unavailable controls
Check your system version, the selected panel and any management restrictions on a work or school Mac. Some controls depend on the hardware or installed apps. Do not run a settings reset simply because an old screenshot uses a different name. Use the Help button or the linked official guide to check the control first.

Restore a setting without resetting the Mac
Write down the old value before experimenting. Return to the same control and reverse that one choice if it gets in the way. Wallpaper, Dock, menu bar and widgets are independent; fixing one preference rarely requires undoing the entire desktop setup.
