Decide which kind of movement you want
The phrase live wallpaper is used for several different behaviors. Before choosing an app or image, decide whether you want an idle screen saver, an appearance that changes with the day, or continuous animation while working.
| Type | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Apple aerial wallpaper | Aerial animation around lock and unlock transitions, with a desktop image. |
| Dynamic wallpaper | Different appearances according to its supported conditions. |
| Screen saver | An idle-screen presentation rather than an ordinary working desktop. |
| Continuous video wallpaper | Requires a solution that explicitly supports ongoing desktop playback. |
Try an Apple aerial first
Use the backgrounds supplied by macOS to see whether aerial transitions meet your needs. Allow the selected background to download if required. An image that looks still while you work is not automatically broken.
- Open System Settings > Wallpaper.
- Choose an available aerial, such as a landscape or underwater view.
- Inspect the option to use it as a screen saver, then check the lock or unlock transition.
Choose screen saver behavior separately
On macOS Tahoe 26, open System Settings > Wallpaper, click Screen Saver, then choose Custom to inspect the available styles. Earlier releases can show a separate Screen Saver panel. These controls choose what appears when the Mac is idle. A matching wallpaper and screen saver can feel continuous, but the screen saver is not the same as a video playing behind open apps. Read the available preview and timing controls before assuming an animation should always run.

Understand what a 4K wallpaper claim means
The original file needs enough pixels for its intended display and crop. A 640-pixel website preview cannot become a detailed 4K original simply by resizing it. Also check the composition: a large image with a portrait crop can still fit poorly across a wide monitor. Obtain files only through their authorized source.
Check a third-party option before relying on it
If continuous motion is essential, check the app’s current macOS support, supported media types, pause controls and behavior on battery. Test it with your normal windows and monitor setup. This article does not establish compatibility for an untested wallpaper app, and the Moodsk thumbnails here are static previews rather than a claim of live-wallpaper support.
Return to a still background
Select a picture or solid color in Wallpaper settings and review Screen Saver separately. If motion comes from a third-party app, use that app’s controls to stop it as well. Keep the two sources separate when diagnosing unexpected animation.
