MAC DESKTOP / PRACTICAL GUIDE

How to show the desktop on Mac without closing apps.

Press Command-Mission Control to move windows aside and see the desktop. On a supported trackpad, spread your thumb and three fingers. Recent macOS versions also offer wallpaper-click controls.

Mission Control shortcuts can be customized. Wallpaper-click behavior is available on recent macOS versions; labels differ between releases and Stage Manager settings. These instructions are based on Apple’s documentation; Moodsk thumbnails are visual references.

01

Choose Show Desktop rather than minimizing everything

Show Desktop temporarily moves windows out of the way so you can reach files and widgets. It does not close your apps or create a new desktop Space. Use it when you need one file, then return to the work already open. Mission Control is different: it spreads windows out so you can select one.

02

Use the keyboard or trackpad

Try the built-in action before changing shortcuts. A keyboard without a Mission Control symbol may use a different key arrangement, so inspect the configured Show Desktop shortcut instead of assuming one function key works on every Mac.

  1. Press Command with the Mission Control key to reveal the desktop.
  2. Alternatively, spread your thumb and three fingers apart on a supported trackpad.
  3. Press the keys again, or pinch your thumb and fingers together, to return to your windows.

03

Choose what clicking the wallpaper does

In System Settings > Desktop & Dock, find the wallpaper-click or reveal-desktop control. Choose the behavior that fits how you work with Stage Manager. If every accidental click moves your windows away, adjust this setting rather than disabling unrelated desktop features.

04

Use a hot corner if gestures are inconvenient

Desktop & Dock includes Hot Corners, which can assign a screen corner to Desktop. Choose a corner you rarely cross and consider a modifier key if you trigger it accidentally. Keep a note of the previous corner action so you can restore it.

05

Check a shortcut that does not work

Start in Keyboard settings and review Keyboard Shortcuts > Mission Control. Check the Show Desktop assignment and any conflict with an app shortcut. For gestures, inspect Trackpad settings. Do not confuse Control-Up Arrow, which opens Mission Control, with the action that moves all windows aside.

Restore predictable desktop behavior

Return the wallpaper-click control, hot corner or keyboard shortcut to the previous choice if the new behavior interrupts work. Change one control at a time. Your desktop arrangement, wallpaper and documents do not need to be reset to fix a reveal-desktop preference.

Common questions

Does Show Desktop close my open windows?

No. It temporarily moves them aside. Use the action again to return, or choose the app you need.

Why does clicking empty wallpaper hide my windows?

The reveal-desktop setting may be enabled. Inspect Desktop & Dock and choose the wallpaper-click behavior you prefer.
